Such signalisation for navigation reveal with all good intentions a possibly excessive use of acoustic stimuli, but along with such technologies as vOICe (Dr. Peter Meijer), suggest the expanding field of possibilities and tools for the visually impaired inhabitants of our cities is very active- Alex Rich

The Nature of Things

In this workshop, the roles were reversed with 20 000 pieces of mass produced Lego being assembled by human machines and trees taking charge, shouting out the commands! Participants were invited to manufacture sculptures inspired by nature, but only had 2 minutes to make their masterpieces, which were installed into the fabric of the room as they walked away with their chocolate coin and edible cash reward. With this workshop we wanted to encourage participants to place more value on the things that they buy instead of just throwing them away.

Continuing on my journey of exploring sustainability in design, I put together a proposal that looked into recycling Styrofoam to create an end product that could be made from the comfort of your own kitchen. Call it adhocism, misappropriation or even appropriate technology.

Even though the weather was a bit dodgy (surprise surprise), The Dulwich Open House Event was filled with a mix of artists, designers, models, performances, music, spills, thrills and so much more…

Inspired by the a traditional form of cooking known as clay cooking, I decided to create a range of  multifunctional portable clay pods that not only hinted towards future kitchenware, but could also serve as tools that encourage a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. These were then featured in an event,as a group project, which offered a multicultural experience under the theme ‘Back to the Future’.

Sheffield: Home of Metal-ware. From process such as annealing steel to make cutlery to using centrifugal casting with pewter.  A great source for learning and inspiration!

How would I describe an expanded designer? Someone who thinks outside the box and realises that maybe it wasn’t a box after all, but a prism.

Having investigated and written about Manufacture and Sustainability, I’ve realised that there are no simple nor perfect answers, but nevertheless as a designer I have a significant part to play. The real question is not the plausibility but the proportionality of sustainability.

What is a basket? “An object or vessel form in a textile structure where dynamics of components are all visible”. Hisako Sekijima

For this project I decided to focus on the properties and characteristics of plants in particular grasses. This decision was mainly influenced by a documentary about the Venus flower basket sea sponge on Attenborough’s Ark. I then began to develop my ideas by combining my interests in sustainable design and reusing materials.

DSC09950 In this second experiment I was able to introduce pattern and colour through the process of melting and heating of bin liners and plastic shopping bags, but the overall strength and durability required was not reached.

DSC09964 Plaiting and coiling the bin bags created quite a strong exterior, but I found it difficult to manipulate the structure and had to look into methods of heating and different non-stick tooling.

DSC09962 I liked the way introducing the use of string reflected the making process and how this in turn added an aesthetic that may or may not be interpreted  as decorative.

DSC09973 The final outcome is my interpretation of contemporary basketry and challenges the way baskets are viewed and used. The subtlety of the making process references the play between fragility and  durability.

“What is currently called realistic was itself impossible, conversely what was once eminently possible is now deemed unrealistic. These reforms invariably aim at making impossible what used to be practicable and making profitable what did not use to be so”.(Fisher, 2009)
